Akō Mātātupu

Ako Mātātupu: Teach First NZ is a not-for-profit organisation and a Tertiary Education Organisation with the future of all young people in Aotearoa at the heart of its kaupapa.

Founded in 2012 with the deliberate intention to provide teacher education with a difference and to diversify the ITE landscape, with a focus on the particular strengths and needs of individuals and communities currently underserved by our education system.

Through the flagship programme (the Teach First NZ Programme), Akō Mātātupu recruits extraordinary individuals to teach in schools serving low socio-economic communities across Aotearoa. Participants on this programme spend two years in the classroom on a full scholarship, graduating with a Postgraduate Diploma in Secondary Teaching.

Akō Mātātupu offers other programmes in the field of Social Justice in Education and has an alumni community committed to fair opportunities for all rangatahi in Aotearoa.
